Do semiotic systems have any effect on human behavior? The answer is Yes!

We can find out that semiotic system in design, advertising or multimedia have the effect on human behavior. A design or an advertising: the image, the sign, the narrative or the myths surrounding us will influence our behavior by way of "codes"

A fashion advertising is designed by insert the photo below. By viewing the photo , we can immediately get to know that the fashion advertising is more on the theme of glamour. This is because that the posture (human behavior) in the photo are can be easily understood by all as a code of femininity.

Woman who want to look glamour in photo, they may posture like the photo below. Therefore sometime fashion advertising do effect human behavior. : )



Here another example of the effect of semiotic systems on human behavior- :


Hand gesture -Thumb up! You can see people show thumb up when they feel good on certain thing. Therefore, thumb up is a sign of good, awesome, perfect ! However, upside down of thumb up will turn into different sign.

*Different countries have different culture which will effect the meaning of thumb up.*


You can just show a thumb up to answer the question which mean "GOOD" when someone ask: "How your exam?"

In the the famous social networking service, Facebook. You will able to see the button below in everywhere of Facebook, like fan page, photo, comment, status.....

They make use of human behavior which is thumb up hand gesture to design a LIKE button. Since thumb up is one of our behavior in daily life, so we can immediately get to know that what the function of the button.

If we were exposed to different signs, our lives be different. For example, another sign which can strongly bring our the meaning of LIKE. Facebook LIKE button may change.

Semiotics means the study of 'signs'. Semiotics in short is the way signs relate to reality. A visual message that we must realize and make a calculated reaction too in that very moment.

We can see many semiotics hundreds of time a days, but what we can make up a sign or a good example of a semiotic system in semiotic?

In ADVERTISING, semiotic system plays a major role in catching the attention of the intended target market like men, women, adults or teens. The placement of certain images, text, colors or other signs is a key part of the overall successfulness of the advertisement. However, I have also learned that the use of semiotics varies with the kind of product being advertised, however between similar products, the overall theme of the ads seems to stay the same with few exceptions.

For me, semiotics is a very useful tool to make up advertising. It is also highly useful for the consumers of advertisements and their products. It gives viewers another tool in avoiding consumerism by seeing that in advertising the ‘hard sell’ has been replaced by a more defuse range of functions.

In conclusion, SEMIOTICS SYSTTEMS have effect on our human behavior. =)

Semiotic system does effect the human behavior,in many different way in our life,we can even see it in our daily life;driver will stop once they see the traffic light turn to red,because they know red means STOP.(except for some rule breakers, >.<)

This is the reason why smart designer nowadays make use of the semiotic system to produce a mind-blowing ads to make sure it can appeal to the potential customers.

EX :If a certain fashion brand want to express the theme of sport, they will use the color that will bring out an active feel, or ask the model to act out an exaggerate body movement or posture.

Semiotics plays an important role in human’s life which affect human behavior. The reason I would say so is due to the body gesture and posture of human does convey out certain sign.

For example, the hand gestures of hand waving could be one of the sign of “bye” or “hi”. Other than that, there is also the yes and no head gestures in which nodding indicates “agree”, “correct” or “yes” while shaking indicates “wrong”, “no”, or “disagree”.

Meanwhile, the human posture in semiotic does indicates the sign of fashion advertising in which models are being dressed up differently will post in a different posture in order to grab the attention of their own audience.

Just from what shu ping have stated above, for model who is shot for fashion advertisement, they will probably post in a glamorous and elegant way while the model who is shot for bra advertisement, they will probably wear their “bikini” and post in a sexy way in which this may enable their body figure to looks much more attractive and temptating.
