For me, film appreciation is to appreciate there needs to be an understanding in a film and help us to understand the key dynamics of what the film is made up of. It would be to reflect on it and to appreciate it.

The Thin Red Line Movie is a 1998 American war film which tells a fictional story of United States forces during the Battle of Mount Austen in World War II.

The first 10 minutes of the movie, there is more happening in this opening sequence than just an introduction to the film’s characters and storyline, We get a taste of how the rest of the film will flow. The Thin Red Line is essentially a character study of the way war affects a company of men who have never stepped foot in a war zone before. The opening scene is a dreamy representation of the calm before the storm. The opening scene shows the love and peace such as love from a mother to her child, love between two lovers, a love between one and your God.

The opening sequence of The Thin Red Line finds two American soldiers AWOL among a group of South Pacific islanders. One of these soldiers, Private Witt (Jim Caviezel), supplies the movie its primary narrative voice, though the ensemble is so large and points of view alternate so frequently that nothing like a main character or "star" can truly be identified. Witt regularly rhapsodizes over the beauty of nature and the bliss of evading combat, though he is not so facile as to overlook the forces of conflict and antagonism that exist everywhere in the world, even outside the state of war.

"What is this war in the heart of nature?" he apostrophizes in voice-over.

"Why does nature vie with itself?" Shots of a crocodile slinking beneath the surface of a river and of muscular vines overtaking the jungle's large trees reiterate how the world is tough, crowded, and full of encroaching predators.

From the scene, I know that the men appreciate life for what it is. Fear grips them when they are recaptured and ordered back to the combat zone.

In the 10 minutes, we can easily who is the main character of the films because he is the most outstanding among others.

In this The Thin Red Line film, the opening shot actually is about an icon, symbol and index. Meanwhile, semiotic is applied on the film. Icon - the crocodile, index - the hunter and symbol - instinct of nature to survive.

Come to another series of shot, the camera is pans and tilts over the forest scenes. The light through the canopy of trees made the scenes over expose. In this shot, the music is becomes backgrounds to the voice over.

From the voice over , we can get know that the poem is about wars , Malick’s scene is poetry, it is Middle Western by listen the accent stands ......

From the film “Thin Red Line”, I can finally understand and find out on how to identify a main character and his reason in the setting throughout the film. We may also get to know the time by when is the story happened and where the film took place.

We can know that by seeing through the activities, attires (props) and human behaviors from the beginning in the first 10minutes of the film as the starting point throughout the whole story line. The reason I would say I get to identify on who is the main character is just by his extraordinary and outstanding looks (eg. with complete gadgets over his body) while compare with others (eg. with their incomplete gadgets).

Besides that, peaceful and harmonious background music was being played by Malick in the first 10 minutes of the film which builds the curiosity of audience on what or something unexpected would be happened soon just as if the scene of the crocodile.

In conclusion, I would say that certain sound or music background played in a film does affect audiences’ thinking and feeling. This could be one of the symbols of sign in Semiotic Studies. Meanwhile, character which looks outstanding and contrast is being highlighted as the main character/subject by the audience through their visual.
