Move to the 2nd part , how does semiotic play a role in media?

By looking at these images and think about the fact that you probably know someone who is suffering from anorexia or bulimia. Our mind will automatic link to certain thing when we see certain pictures.

A girl growing up in our culture might not seriously imitate or want to be like the women in fashion advertisements, but she is likely to learn a code of femininity which implies that a "true" woman( from the media) is thin, strategically "girlish," frail, passive, focused on others, etc.

For me, semiotic is a system of signs asserting meaning by the special way of language and image. The very good example is semiotic in media such as print advertisement, webpage and etc. By look the images above, I realize that images really work as natural language and it is tied directly to identity the meaning of fashion advertisement. The advertisement standards of woman beauty and true woman by sheer style and common sense. Semiotic, ROCKZ!!! ^^

I do agree with mei shan of the fact that language and image used in print ads does conveys different meanings in different ways which is in Semiotic Studies. As you know, most ads have the intention to make people aware of a product, service or concept followed by the purchase, but there are ads whose main aim is to inform people, more precisely to call their attention to a certain topic. Consequently, the advertisement with language and image on it may cause in a different reaction. Just make a comparison from the pictures above, the one who is suffering from anorexia or bulimia and the girl who is thin, strategically "girlish," frail, passive, focused on others, the reactions we see from both of them are totally different. We probably will think that the ads with the girl with anorexia is able to attract our attention and are more likely to be retained in our memory. Therefore, attracting interest can be done on different ways, by either using attention attracting pictures, sounds, signs or just simple words and phrases.

Semiotics is concerned about the meaning-making and representation in many types of forms, and now is another forms which is in ‘MEDIA’.

After i had read the post. I do agree about the post. An image may have different signified. Just like what YanShan had wrote in the post, a thin woman may bring out the message of suffering of some disease in the print ads. However an pretty woman will bring out another message from the print ads as well.

Besides that, different countries may have different cultures. Therefore before doing an print ads or other media, we as a designer need to create a creative or nice print ads based on the culture of the country. This is because some image may representing or have another denotation meaning compared other country.

:)

Semiotics is something that stands for something.
Like in today's media, they are brainwashing most teenagers that "thin = pretty & fat = ugly" with all edited photos and video together with makeup covering the truth.
Making the artist / actor / models someone in the fairy tales story.
In another word, they are using those human as a sign / symbol / semiotics in the media to gain popularity, advertising, marketing.

This cause most teenager girls to set those artist / actor / models as their idol and gone crazy about them, just like the company planned.
