Week 1: Intro to semiotic studies (ii)

Move to the 2nd part , how does semiotic play a role in media?

By looking at these images and think about the fact that you probably know someone who is suffering from anorexia or bulimia. Our mind will automatic link to certain thing when we see certain pictures.

A girl growing up in our culture might not seriously imitate or want to be like the women in fashion advertisements, but she is likely to learn a code of femininity which implies that a "true" woman( from the media) is thin, strategically "girlish," frail, passive, focused on others, etc.

Week 1: Intro to semiotic studies

Comments (4) |

Basically , semiotic is the study of signage.
SIGN

The basic unit of meaning, at least in Saussure's version of semiotics, is the Sign. A sign is anything that makes meaning. Or in Umberto Eco's clever formulation,
"a sign is anything that can be used to tell a lie."

So how does semiotic play a role in text?

The basic, most fundamental form of sign, that is, of the relation of signifier to signified, is denotation(which is the literal meaning of a sign.),

example: the word "rose" literally signify a type of flower. But semiotic start to be interesting when it explores connotation.
When it comes to connotation, rose can means passion or love.
Another example,

the word"GAY",literally it means that guy love guy,but in connotation it can have another meaning,it means happy.
